Single-payer health care is a term used in the USA to describe a system of health care financing in which a single entity pays for all health care costs. Most universal health care systems are also single-payer systems. The "single-payer" is often an agency of the government (national, regional or local) which meets the costs of medical services from central funds provided from taxation and/or insurance contributions. In a single-payer system, private hospitals and doctors' practices may remain private. This distinguishes the single-payer system from broader forms of socialized medicine, in which hospitals are run by the government and medical professionals are employed by the government.
The term comes up frequently in debates about reforming of the U.S. health care system. Proponents of single-payer heath care assert that it would be the most efficient way to ensure universal coverage, which the current private U.S. system lacks. Critics of single-payer health care argue that moving to such a system in the U.S. would negatively affect health care quality and innovation and that the U.S. would be better off adopting free-market approaches to health care reform, such as tax code reform and the movement toward consumer driven health care.
